On Your 6 Designs Holster Review
On Your 6 Designs outside the waist band (left) and inside the waistband (right) Kydex holsters are custom made to order. |
Over the last few years I have been prone to buy and promote locally made products. At the very least, I try to buy products made in the great state of Texas. When Fobus introduced some of the first Kydex holsters on the market, they were one of the few manufacturers out there and had a niche of the market. In the past decade, the popularity and availability of Kydex holsters has grown leaps and bounds.
When I was tasked with ordering some plain clothes holsters for my former agency, I found several Texas based manufacturers, and was not disappointed with the fit and quality of their products. Now, I will say this, a Kydex holster is a Kydex holster. While there is a difference in color and Kydex thickness, I have yet to see one manufacturer have a technology or process superior to the other. I kept this mind when I went to search for a new holster for my 1911.
After calling around and e-mailing several of the manufacturers I was familiar with, I got similar responses of either, “Sorry, we don’t carry a holster for your pistol.” or “Yes, we can do it, but it will take 6 to 8 weeks.” Really?!? 6 to 8 weeks to heat mold a piece of Kydex around a pistol? Oh, and charge me $70-$80 on top of that?
Then I remembered a posting on a local law enforcement online group about a San Antonio based company, named On Your 6 Designs, that manufactures Kydex holsters. Knowing that I was going to be in the big city in a few days, I e-mailed On Your 6 Designs ( https://onyour6designs.com/ ) and asked how much an IWB and OWB holster would cost for my pistol.
Figuring I would get the standard response I got from other companies, I was in shock when I got my response back! According to the e-mail, I was told that if I brought my pistol in, they would have it custom molded for me and depending on how many orders were in front of me, they could have both holsters to me in an hour and a half. Price was $70 with my LE/Military discount they offer. Oh, and that is for both holsters, not just one!
I came into their shop on a Friday around lunch time. I was greeted at the counter by Jim, who was the gentleman that answered my e-mails. After about 30 seconds of talking to him, he remembered our correspondence of what I wanted and said he would have it ready in about an hour and a half. True to his word, I received a phone call right on time telling me my holsters were ready for pickup.
When I arrived back at the shop, I was asked to check and double-check the fit and retention of the holster so that if anything needed to be corrected, it could be done right then and there. This was nice and refreshing as this level of customer service is often few and far between. After affirming the fit was good, I paid for my two holsters ($73 with tax) and went out the door.
When I got home, I had time to sit down and examine the holsters a little bit more in-depth. On Your 6 Designs uses the thinner Kydex material, but do not let this discourage you. Since these holsters are primarily designed for concealed carry, the thinner Kydex allows for light weight and easier concealment. Fit and feel was just as comparable to some of the other manufacturers holsters I have that utilize the thicker Kydex material. Honestly, I kind of like the thinner material better!
Assembly of the holster (belt clips and screws) were quality made. While there were a few tool marks here and there (in inconspicuous places), this is what makes these holster unique and assures you that they are hand-made to your order instead of being stamped out on a machine or assembly line.
Bottom line, if you are looking for a good conceal carry holster that doesn’t break the bank, then check out On Your 6 Designs. They can also make magazine pouches, knife scabbards, handcuff cases and flashlight holders. Pretty much, if it can be molded around it, they can probably make a holder for it!
UPDATE:
I have been using both holsters for a couple of weeks now. The IWB is very comfortable and sits exactly where I like it. Since 1911s are known to be a much slimmer gun due to their single stack magazines, there is less of an imprint. The same holds true on my outside the waist band holster! Due to the thinner material, there is a little bit of flex to it, which makes it much more comfortable. Since it sits snug, placing a t-shirt or button-up shirt over the top completely conceals this pistol!
